Chemical Engineering, UC Davis Tonya Kuhl, is a Professor of Chemical Engineering and a faculty member of the Biophysics Materials Science, and Biomedical Engineering Graduate Groups at the University of California, Davis. She is the co-Director of the UC Davis Coffee Center. Her research interests are in the general area of colloidal science and self-assembling complex fluid systems. She and her research group directly measure the forces and friction between surfaces in liquids and vapors. This work spans diverse research fields such as measuring the friction (astringency) of different wines to measuring the effect of cement additives. She is passionate about coffee and teaching.

Owner/Operator, Heartland Tech With over ten years of experience in coffee and coffee equipment service I am excited to share my passion with others. I started my career in coffee as many others have as a Barista. I pretty much immediately fell in love with coffee. I happily spent the next decade of my life committed to learning and growing in my aptitude and abilities in the industry. Right now I am the proud owner of a mobile coffee trailer called Kookaburra Coffee (kookaburra.coffee) that's parked outside of my other business Heartland Tech (heartlandrepair.com) in Wichita, Kansas. So I still on a daily basis get to dabble in making espresso and coffee for myself and even make beverages for customers if I have the time. Heartland Tech is exclusively a specialty coffee equipment sales, repair and maintenance shop. We have an ever growing staff of coffee technicians, dispatchers, coffee trainers, and simply put bad-ass people who have helped build and grow Heartland into an amazing company servicing over 500 customers in the Mid-West.

Starting at a simple coffee stand, Mark made contacts and worked various jobs from Barista, Sales & Repair before moving back to Kansas City where he opened 5 coffee shops and helped out his old friend and mentor in Seattle who had just landed a National Account which had a store in Kansas City. From servicing that single store, Mark successfully navigated what has now become a 28 year journey in the field of Coffee Technician Services. She began her coffee career at ESI in Ballard (as an accountant). Once established in the ESI family, the office job changed into hands-on Bench Test Management and Logistics. ESI was acquired by Franke Coffee Systems, so she took the opportunity to help grow Synesso in the global role of Salesperson, Parts guru, Logistics, and Customer Service. Currently, Ann is the co-owner and GM of Sproparts, the exclusive distributor of Nuova Ricambi SRL. Equipment Standards Lead, Starbucks Kaleb Leach is the Equipment Standards lead at Starbucks Coffee Company, he has been working in the specialty coffee industry since 1995. He started his coffee Journey as apprentice to a coffee roaster, as a requirement of that role he learned the basics of coffee equipment repair including roaster repair and maintenance. This provided the experince needed to transition into a full time coffee technician role in 1999. Technician/Owner, HTECHS Frank is a barista turned Technician/Owner of HTECHS Services in Houston, TX, and a proud father to two very lazy ginger cats. He started as a barista in 2009 for several local roaster cafes where he learned coffee and trained baristas and consulted cafe openings. Retail isn't a great long term fit for everyone, but he thought roasting didn't look very exciting so when it was time to move on he turned to tech work. He was hired to work a Starbucks contract in 2014 for Moscow Ecowater and later in 2015 founded HTECHS when his former coworkers found out he was repairing machines. He worked both jobs concurrently until one had to go and and has been running HTECHS full time since 2018. IG: @frank.freeman

Technician, Dolce Neve Jay Kistner originally comes from a culinary background ground where he was a chef in the Sonoma county wine country for 9 years. In 1994 Jay founded Dolce Neve where he manufactured an organic granita mix that he sold whole sale to the local cafes. Jay then found him self working on the granita machines he had been selling with his whole sale granita program. He was then asked by many of his customers to work on their espresso machines. His first encounter with an espresso machine was a request to rebuild a four group Rancilio AT. Jay had mounted it on the back of his 1978 Alfa Romeo spider to bring back to his garage in order to give him self a self guided lesson on espresso machines. This turned into a full rebuild along with acid bath, powder coating of the frame and panels. This process paved the way for a general understanding of the hydraulic flow and the heating circuit of an espresso machine. He then learned the personalities of all the machines in his service area over the years and forged a good working knowledge of being an espresso machine technician. Dolce Neve is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year and is very excited to continue their pursuit in building partnerships with service companies, Roasters and manufactures across the country.

Equipment Division Manager, Odeko Philip McNerney is the Equipment Division Manager for Odeko. In this role, Phil oversees coffee-related equipment sales, installations, repairs, and preventative maintenance. The current focus for these activities revolves around commercial accounts. Odeko's service division is currently active in 3 of our 14 warehouses, with ambitions to grow. Before Odeko Phil worked for his family company BevTech, in Eliot, Maine. Since 1985, Bevtech supplied cafes with food products and also sold/maintained coffee equipment throughout New England. Bevtech was acquired by Odeko in early 2021, which is when Phil joined Odeko to start the equipment division.

Founder, PIT CREW COFFEE SERVICE Allen's journey the coffee industry has gone through many facets from roasting, purchasing, education, sales and service. He has been a credentialed instructor for the former SCAA and the SCA, has served as the chair of the Roasters guild and was a Q-grader for over 10 years. He has taught many aspects of coffee in numerous countries including roasting, cupping, brewing, green coffee and safety.
